HMS Sutherland visits the Rock

HMS SUTHERLAND has recently completed her Operational Sea Training under Flag Officer Sea Training and is now deployed on a six month deployment as part of the RN’s standing commitment in the Middle East.

She is ready to conduct counter piracy and terrorism operations as part of the Combined Maritime Force for example by boarding through Royal Navy and Royal Marine boarding teams. She carries a Merlin Helicopter which enhances the ship’s capability by providing greater anti-submarine warfare ability, surface search and search and rescue ability. HMS SUTHERLAND is also ready to conduct contingency tasking e.g humanitarian work.

In 2011 HMS Sutherland escorted HMS Ocean and HMS Albion to the Mediterranean as events in Libya escalated as part of the Cougar deployment of the Responsive Force Task Group. As the group returned from the Indian Ocean, Sutherland saw action briefly off the coast of Libya.

Since returning to the UK, the ship participated in two major exercises: Joint Warrior off the coast of Scotland and a joint anti submarine warfare exercise in the Atlantic ocean. Despite being the 13th of 16 Type 23 frigates, HMS Sutherland was the first warship to receive – and fire – the updated Seawolf air defence missile system; She is also Britain’s fastest frigate, reaching more than 34 knots (39mph) during trials in 2004.

Given her Scottish roots it is perhaps only right that she was launched with the smashing of a bottle of whisky, not champagne, against the hull on the slipway at the Yarrow yard on the Clyde back in 1996.

HMS SUTHERLAND will be in Gibraltar from 10 to 15 July and, before leaving will carry out three days of gunnery and tactical exercises in International waters east of Gibraltar before heading off on her deployment. We will therefore see her around the Rock and probably hear her practice firing next weekend.
