Handbags and gladrags event raises 570 pounds for women’s refuge

A hugely successful ‘Handbags and Gladrags’ event was held at the Lion Bar in Europa on Friday night which raised £570 in aid of the Women’s Refuge Gibraltar.

The idea of the fundraiser is to sell unwanted dresses that sit in your wardrobe never seeing the light of day that someone else could get the benefit of wearing, 10% of the sale price goes directly to the nominated charity and the seller can keep the rest. With over 300 dresses on offer there was plenty of choice for the 100 people who attended the event. There were also stalls selling jewelry, candles, books, make-up and homemade cakes.

The event was organized by MOD employee Maggie Connors who came up with the eco-friendly charity idea last year and is the second time she has run it in Gibraltar. Maggie said; “I would like to thank the great team of ladies that helped me organize the event, I couldn’t have done it without them and I would also like to thank the Warrant Officers & Sergeants Mess and the Thrift Shop for giving us some funds towards the beautiful decorations.” Helping Maggie were Jeanna Hilton, Jeannie Crone, Robyn Carley, Charlotte Waters and Helen Reilly from BFBS radio who compered the evening.
