Government sets up litter committee

The Minister for the Environment, Dr John Cortes hosted a meeting last week with Government officials, the Royal Gibraltar Police, Government contractors and non-governmental organisations and pressure groups to discuss the many problems relating to litter in Gibraltar.

Subjects discussed included litter, fly-tipping, dog fouling and graffiti. The accumulation of litter and the defacing of historic sites, particularly on the Upper Rock, was one of the main concerns expressed. A frank and open exchange between the participants allowed the identification of the problems and some of the possible solutions.

The main conclusion of the meeting was the need for co-ordination and rapid reaction to problem areas, as well as issues to do with education and enforcement.

As a result, this will now become a permanent committee which will meet periodically, initially every two months, with a view to achieving a cleaner, tidier, more attractive and healthier Gibraltar.
