Gibraltar defies Spain and celebrates Queen's Diamond Jubilee

In Saturday’s brilliant sunshine, Thomson’s Battery of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment fired a 21-Gun Salute to mark the Diamond Jubilee anniversary of Accession to the Throne of Queen Elizabeth II. The Mayor of Gibraltar, Julio Alcantra was the Reviewing Officer and was accompanied by the Regiment’s Commanding Officer, Lt Col Colin Risso. A UK paper describes it as Gibraltar defying Spain, which had protested to the extent of withdrawing their Queen Sofia from attending an event hosted by The Queen.

The Salute was a fitting contribution to what is a packed weekend of Jubilee celebrations.

Minister for Culture, Steven Linares, said:

It gives me great pleasure to present the full and varied programme of events that comprise this weekends festivities. Many of these events have been organised by or on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and the Diamond Jubilee Committee. I wish you all a most enjoyable and entertaining Diamond Jubilee long weekend.

Diamond Jubilee Variety Performance at John Mackintosh Square on Saturday drew a large crowd, the square being packed. It featured the Gibraltar Academy of Dance, Danza Academy, Urban Dance Group, Stylos Dance Studios, Showdance Company, Transitions Dance Academy, The Gibraltar National Choir, Faster than Magic, Santos Productions Choir, A.I.M, The Noiz, Andrea Simpson, Nathan Payas and Nicole Victor.

The Big Lunch Street Party on Sunday from 11am to 4pm was at Casemates, Main Street, John Mackintosh Square,Cannon Lane and Governors Parade. There was a Fancy Dress at Casemates followed by Parade to John Mackintosh Square where there was a live performance.

100 boats are to take part in Flotilla from Ocean Village on Monday at noon to sail around the Rock,flying their flags, ringing bells and tooting their horns.

Other events include the lighting of the jubilee beacon, and Scouts and Guides Diamond Jubilee Bonfire event in Little Bay.

An UK paper said, Gibraltar defies Spain and celebrates the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
