Building a stairway to the Upper Town

Gibraltar’s first open-air escalator which will soon be taking people from Engineers Lane into the Upper Town.

Located behind the new Car Park in Engineer Lane, a project started by the previous Government, it is expected to be fully working by next June.

The equipment is on site and the installation well under way.

Paul Balban, Minister for Traffic, Health & Safety and Technical Services told the media that they had looked at the project and this was an additional improvement which would provide access to people to an area which has traditionally been a difficult area to reach, especially by foot

It would be used by tourists and residents of the upper town alike, and there would be a lift at the back of the car park for elderly or disabled people.

The escalator is adjacent to the Hindu Temple and would improve access to that too.

The car park will have energy efficient LED light bulbs and to accommodate new cars which are electrically powered this car park and future car parks in Gibraltar will have an area for users to recharge their car.

The escalator equipment was purchased from the Schindler Group, founded in Switzerland in 1874, a leading global provider of elevators, escalators and related services. Its innovative and environmentally-friendly access and transit-management systems make an important contribution to mobility in urban societies.
