Automated External Defibrillators

Research has proven that Automated External Defibrillators [AED’s] can make a massive difference to the survival rate of a person suffering from Sudden Cardiac Arrest [SCA] insofar that for every minute that passes after an SCA in which the casualty does not receive defibrillation, the life expectancy drops by 10%. Hence early access to a defibrillator becomes crucial for improving life expectancy.

For this reason, Royal Gibraltar Police officers who are first time emergency responders are now being trained in operating AED devices. This is a course and its primary objective is to make the candidates competent in understanding how an AED works, how the said AED influences the electrical impulses which control the heart and how to safely operate the said devise in situations of SCA.

After the 4 hour course candidates undergo a practical and theoretical assessment on the course content and if successful receive an approved St. John’s Ambulance qualification.

So far 26 RGP officers have successfully completed the training.
