Anna Sackett from the International Center for Clubhouse Development (ICCD) in New York visited the Gibraltar Clubhouse at 34 Line Wall Road on Friday 29th June 2012 and was thrilled by the site and the wonderful Gibraltarian welcome. On arrival at the Clubhouse she was greeted by the Minister for Equality and Social Services, Samantha Sacramento, who has undertaken Ministerial responsibility for the Gibraltar Clubhouse Project and of course Emily Adamberry Olivero, the Clubhouse Director together with a group of members and volunteers who were taking part in the Friday work ordered day held regularly on a weekly basis at the moment and which will increase in the future to 5 Days a week once the building works has been completed.

The Gibraltar Broadcasting Corporation was also on the scene filming this exciting moment and it was a lovely coincidence that there was a work ‘ordered’ day going on and members and volunteers were thrilled to welcome Anna, her cousin and the Minister who was also visiting the premises for the first time. There was plenty of opportunity for people to chat to each other as it was also the first time also for the TV crew and all were amazed by the wonderful historical site on which The Gibraltar Clubhouse will soon be having purpose built premises constructed. At the moment the architects are busy creating the design which will incorporate all heritage considerations and restrictions etc.

The visit was covered that same evening on Gibraltar television and the news bulletin can be viewed on the following link:-

All three were interviewed, The Minister, Anna Sackett and Emily who made it a point to emphasize the significance of the visit to show that “We Are Not Alone”. (one of the Clubhouse mottos)

Despite the short visit, Emily Adamberry Olivero, the Gibraltar Clubhouse Director ensured that Anna and her cousin saw as much as possible in the few hours available. Emily accompanied by Dr Rene Beguelin and Tania, a volunteer psychologist gave them a Rock Tour and because it was a beautiful clear day, they were able to witness the fantastic views of Spain and Morocco from the top of the Rock.

It was also fascinating to note that the Clubhouse site is sheltered by Charles V wall which extends from the Clubhouse all the way up the Rock practically diving the Rock in half. Gibraltar may be small in size but its gigantic when it comes to history.

There was even just enough time to stop for a drink at Ocean Village Marina just before catching the ferry from Gibraltar to Tangier.
